"Tools for Teachers: A Standards-Aligned Review of the Resources for Military Kids" will be held Tuesday, February 7, 2012 from 10:00 a.m. to
11:30 a.m. (Eastern Time).
Children of parents or caregivers who have been deployed experience a range of emotions and unique educational needs. This presentation will provide a brief overview of the emotional cycle of deployment as well as some of the needs experienced by these children.
Dawn Hicks, the reigning Mrs. Pennsylvania International 2011, is a veteran and civilian analyst for the Department of Defense. She grew up in a military family and served 9 years in the U.S. Air Force. Through her efforts, she continues to generate awareness of the challenges military members face and provide support for the families left behind. Mrs. Hicks will share a first-hand perspective of the important role school personnel can play in helping children handle the stress and struggles associated with military deployment.
A detailed description of various tools and resources available to students to help create a supportive educational environment in which they can succeed also will be provided; along with a standards-aligned lesson plan for an activity to help support children affected by military deployment.
This training opportunity is offered by the Center for Safe Schools through funding provided by Operation: Military Kids! There is no cost to participate. This training has been approved for 1.5 Act 48 credit hours. If you are interested in receiving Act 48 credits, a $10.00 processing fee must be forwarded to our office upon completion of the session. About Me
- Dawn Hicks
- Hanover, Pennsylvania
- My husband Todd and I have been together 11 years and married for 6. My father, a retired Army Colonel inspired me to enlist in the military at 19 and I am a proud Gulf War veteran having served 9 years in the Air Force. In 2002 I left the military life and we planted our roots in Hanover, Pennsylvania. These days I'm still working for the Department of Defense as a civilian and spent 6 months of 2010 deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. As someone who grew up in a military family, served in the military, and continues to work closely with the military, I understand how critical a strong support system can be. That is why we as a family put our full support behind the Armed Forces Foundation, a non-profit organization that provides comfort and support to our military community when they need it most. www.armedforcesfoundation.org.
